Effect of Argon Laser Photocoagulation for Glaucoma

Abstract
We treated 14 eyes(12 patients) with angle closure glaucoma(acute angle closure glaucoma; 7 eyes, chronic angle closure glaucoma; 5 eyes, pupillary block glaucoma in aphakia; 2 eyes) by argon laser iridotomy.
The results were as follows.
1. One attempt of laser iridotomy was successful in 9 of the 14 eyes, and two attempts were required in 5 remaining eyes.
2. Average number of administered laser burns were higher in acute angle closure glaucoma than in chronic angle closure glaucoma. It was the least in pupillary block glaucoma in aphakic eyes.
3. Intraocular pressure was controlled successfully without medical therapy in 5 eyes with acute angle closure glaucoma and 1 eye with secondary glaucoma due to seclusio pupillae in aphakia. The topical application of intraocular pressure reducing agents was necessary in 8 eyes.
4. The visual acuity improved markedly in 5 eyes with acute angle closure glaucoma which have short duration and no optic nerve damage.
5. There was no significant complication in all cases.
